Why Volunteer?
There are a thousands of reasons to volunteer,
as many as there are volunteer firefighters. Some
do it to help their community, some for the
friendship and support of their fellow
firefighters, others because they like to ride in
big red trucks with flashing lights!
The one thing all volunteers seem to have in common
is that they love what they do.
Falls Fire Department has part-time paid staff from
7am to 5pm, every day of the week. The rest of the
time is covered by volunteers. These firefighters
are your friends and neighbors, professional in
every sense except receiving a paycheck for what
they do.
For the Falls Fire Department to continue
protecting and serving the community, volunteers
are always needed.
How Do I Volunteer?
Are you interested? Here's how you get
started:
1. Visit the fire station.
This step is not required, but it is
recommended. Visit the fire station and talk to
some of the members. Investigate for yourself if
this is something you'd be interested in. The
members there can get you started, and they can
provide you with an application packet at that
time.
You can find members at the fire station every day
between 7am and 5pm, and most evenings. You're also
welcome to attend a weekly meeting. These meetings
are held every Monday at 7pm.
2. Complete a Falls Fire Department application.
You can get a copy at the fire station, or
download a copy
here.
3. Obtain a copy of your driving record for the
last 7 years
A copy of a North Carolina drivers record can
be ordered from the North Carolina DMV
here.
4. Obtain a copy of your criminal record for the
last 7 years
Visit the CCBI on the second floor of the Wake
County Public Safety Building and let them know you
need a certified criminal record search because
you're joining a volunteer fire deparment. At this
time, there is not a way to request the record
online.
The address is:
CCBI
Wake County Public Safety Building
330 South Salisbury Street
Raleigh, North Carolina 27602
5. Bring the application and records to the
station and attend at least 3 weekly meetings
The membership committee will review your
application and all the members will have a chance
to get to know you over a few meetings. At that
time, the membership committee will vote on
selecting you as a probationanry firefighter.
If selected, you will be a probationary firefighter
for three months. During that time you need to complete:
Essentials of Firefighting Levels I & II (New Recruit School)
Hazmat Ops+
Incident Command System (ICS)
To find out when classes will be offered visit the Wake Technical Community College
Fire Services Training Calendar .
